ONLINE SHOPPER
Elusive Quarry, Very Like a Whale
By MICHELLE SLATALLA

SUPPOSE there was a time when even Captain Ahab managed to temporarily suppress his urge to pursue Moby-Dick. For a while I gave up trying to buy an antique Oriental rug.
But aside from the peg leg, Ahab and I have much in common. His obsession eventually led him back to sea on an ill-fated expedition. Mine sent me shopping online.
In the months since I last wrote about my search, my goal has remained clear: to buy a better rug than I could otherwise afford by paying a below-market price.
While I was willing to pay a substantial amount for a quality rug, I turned my back on the methods of shopping that had pointed me toward the realm of retail prices. I quit borrowing rugs from stores to test in my living room. And no more real-life auctions where I became paralyzed by indecision as other bidders stared.
Instead I spent the spring reading rug collectors' posts at message boards like spongobongo.com,"

A major exhibition on Iranian carpets opened at the Mitsubishi Club in the Japanese capital of Tokyo on Tuesday.

The two-day exposition marks the production of a joint Irano-Japanese movie called `The Wind Carpet' directed by Kamal Tabrizi. In the inaugural ceremony, the producer of the film, Yomiko Masuda praised the beauty of Iranian carpets and said that `The Wind Carpet' mainly aims to manifest the charms of the craft to the Japanese people. The celebrated Japanese actor, Takaaki Enoki, who appears in the role of the father of a ten-year-old girl traveling to Isfahan to pick up a Persian carpet in `The Wind Carpet`, said that the movie provided an opportunity for cultural exchange between the two states.

'The word `Wind' is used to indicate the concept of traversing the frontiers and overlooking the distinction between races, religions and languages,' he said. Enoki noted that during the production of the film in Isfahan, he had the chance to tour carpet weaving workshops and closely view the

Notes on Vice President Seyed Hossein Mar'ashi: "President Mohammad Khatami has named Seyed Hossein Mar'ashi Vice President and chairman of the Organization of Cultural Heritage and Tourism. Mar'ashiis well known to people in the world of Oriental Rugs with his important work in revitalizing the Kerman rug production.
I had the chance to speak with Tom Atiyeh of Atiyeh International, LTD. who credits Vice President Mar'ashi with being very instrumental in the return of Atiyeh International to Kerman. Atiyeh praised Mar'ashi for his crucial work in aiding the economic progress and development of Kerman. After a long history in Kerman Atiyeh was one of the many American producers who withdrew from Iran after the fall of the Shah and the resulting difficulties."

Persian Rugs & Carpets - Kerman: "Raver or Laver Kerman became known for the best Kerman Persian carpets. Raver was a town 120 miles from Kerman where the Atiyeh family owned a large number of looms. Through the 20th century the Atiyehs were a major or perhaps the major producer of Kerman carpets. It only stopped when due to the Islamic revolution and ensuing difficulties they shifted production to China.
Other villages besides Raver include Mahan, Jupar, Rafsanjani, Kupayeh district, Chatrud, Khanuk, Hudk, Sarasiab, Dewziah, Seredar, Mazabad, Gok, and Zarand.
The best books on Kerman rugs are The Persian Carpet by Cecil Edwards and Oriental Carpet Design. by PRJ Ford. Edwards praised Kerman carpets extensively and felt they were the best of Persia and best in the world. he noted that due to the use of roller looms they were weaving up to 15 by 30 foot carpets.
Edwards noted that the top designers were:
Mohsen Khan,
Hassan Khan (his son) died 1945.
Ahmed Khan (his Grandson)
Ahmed Khan,
Ahmed Ali Khan,
Zeman Khan,
Sheikh Hossein,
Azizollah,
Ali Riza. "
